Providenciales hit by heavy flooding

Heavy rains from Tropical Storm Cristobal brought widespread flooding to Providenciales

Airport workers sweeping floodwater out of the terminal at Providenciales International Airport

Heavy rains from the weekend passage of Tropical Storm Cristobal caused widespread flooding in Providenciales.

Floodwater engulfed the entire downtown area, including the parking lot of the Island Pride Supermarket and Town Centre Mall, the main downtown roads and stadium area.

Access to government offices including the Treasury, Post Office and the Department of Planning were all impacted by the floods. Members of the public and government workers will be forced to step out in ankle deep water come Monday morning unless the rain subsides and Engineering Management Services (EMS) officials implement an urgent plan to clear the drainage system in the area.

Elsewhere, Providenciales airport workers were forced to take up brooms and sweep the water out of the new airport terminal, which is 90 percent complete. The new open design appears to be incapable of handling the type of downpour that usually occurs from tropical depressions and storms that pass annually.

The terminal’s new roof system faced its first test this weekend and the design and construction appear to have failed to cope with the conditions.

Sunday’s American Airlines flight from Miami was cancelled due to the storm.

According to meteorologists, the rain is expected to continue until early Monday morning.
