Tropical cyclone Cristobal strengthened into a hurricane on Monday night as it picked up speed heading away from The Bahamas heading towards Bermuda. Meanwhile, forecasters are tracking two more disturbances in the tropical Atlantic heading towards the Caribbean.

Although a member of the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF), the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) did not participate in a new excess rainfall insurance package offered by the facility. The CCRIF recently announced that just eight of its 16 members have purchased the policy.

Premier Rufus Ewing’s administration has rushed to respond to close to 12 inches of rainfall from Tropical Storm Cristobal over the weekend that resulted in widespread flooding in Providenciales and North Caicos. Extensive flooding has been reported in several areas.

Heavy rains from the weekend passage of Tropical Storm Cristobal caused widespread flooding in Providenciales. Floodwater engulfed the entire downtown area, including the parking lot of the Island Pride Supermarket and Town Centre Mall, the main downtown roads and stadium area.

Tropical Storm Cristobal formed on Sunday over the Bahamas and storm warnings have been issued for the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, where heavy rainfall is likely. Interests in the northwestern Bahamas should also monitor the progress of this system.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for the Turks and Caicos Islands as the centre of Tropical Storm Bertha was passing just south of Puerto Rico on Saturday morning, moving toward the west-northwest near 22 mph. A turn toward the northwest is expected by Saturday night.

The Atlantic hurricane season should be slightly slower than initially forecast, Colorado State University climatologists Phil Klotzbach and William Gray said in an updated forecast on Friday. The two experts now estimate that eight hurricanes, including three major ones, will emerge this season.

A tropical storm watch has been issued for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas as Tropical Storm Chantal continued to strengthen overnight. Residents should start to make preparations as Chantal approaches and small craft operators should not venture far from port.
