The TCIFA National Academy Football pitch came alive over the weekend with two fiercely played out Women’s Football League (WFL) matches. The Net Rockers showed just how much improvement they have made this season with a spirited performance against league champions AFC Academy Strikers on Sunday, February 7th in the first game of the double header.
Ashlii Barnett scored twice, with a third being added by Emmanuella Meneide. Despite Barnett hitting in almost 20 crosses from the right wing - the Strikers forwards failed to convert these chances. Sterling work was witnessed by Bertha Lee Belle - who kept the scoreline respectable. Nevertheless, the Net Rockers had chances to score themselves; yet with Amelie Speer being alert on several occasions, she ensured that she kept another clean sheet for her team.
In the second game, with some quality finishing in front of goal gave Grace Bay FC their biggest win of the season with a 10-0 victory over the AFC Academy Hurricanes. Regardless of the scoreline, the Hurricanes were no pushovers and had several chances to score themselves; the clearest chance came to the hard working Christina Hinds whose penalty was well saved by Louise Henderson.
Of the games, Candace Hanchell, President of the WFL said: “Both matches were evidence of a new and exciting level of competition and, also highlighted each team's competitive spirit and determination to win.”
Christopher Bryan, President of the TCIFA said: “Competition in the Women’s Football League has strengthened this season and is evidence of all the work and commitment that the team coaches and the players have put into their game. This helps the Association tremendously with the preparation for the Women’s National Team’s upcoming games against the Dominican Republic in the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup in March.”
