The 10-year census, which was scheduled to begin on January 25, 2012, continues in process. Census takers report that the taking of the people counts takes much longer than originally estimated. There are numerous questions and the need to fill out a booklet for each family and residence. Also being verified and counted are dwellings under roof but unoccupied.
Census takers often have to return several times to each residence because people are not at home or those at home are unable to respond to all the questions posed for each resident. There has been a small but noted resistance to any questions from some work permit holders and illegal residents.
Both an initial shortage of supplies stalled the start of the process, which is headquartered in Grand Turk. The shortages are reported to continue as the census moves forward.
Initially the census was targeted for completion by mid March but now some say this is weeks away.
