The senior civil servant responsible for the UK’s Overseas Territories will visit the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) to discuss how to work jointly to increase the country’s prosperity, jobs and growth, next week, 28-30 October 2013.
Director for the Overseas Territories, Dr Peter Hayes
Dr Peter Hayes, Director for the Overseas Territories in the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), will discuss these key issues with Premier Rufus Ewing and his Cabinet, opposition figures, business people, civil servants and the public during his stay.
This is a key agenda-setting meeting ahead of Ewing and Governor Peter Beckingham’s trip to London to meet UK ministers at the Joint Ministerial Council (JMC), which will be attended by all OT leaders, in London 25-29 November 2013. The JMC will this year have a particular focus upon growing the economies of the Overseas Territories, including a major outreach event to UK and international businesses and investors.
“The UK prime minister, David Cameron, has made clear the importance of our relationship with the Overseas Territories for the British people,” said Peter Hayes in advance of his trip.
“The relationship brings with it shared responsibilities and obligations, as set out in the White Paper of last year. The UK stepped in to prevent the collapse of the TCI economy in 2011 through a $260 million loan guarantee. During this visit I want to explore with the premier and government their plans for growing the economy for the longer term, and how the UK can continue to support this.”
