Devon Smith, described by Premier Rufus Ewing as the Progressive National Party (PNP) campaign manager, has written to Britain’s Foreign Secretary William Hague and Overseas Territories Minister Mark Simmonds complaining about an alleged failure on the part of the TCI government to release the official results of Friday’s by-election.
“Over forty eight (48) hours ago polls closed in a supreme court ordered bi-election, in the seventh electoral district Cheshire Hall and Richmond Hills, in the said OT. The results of this election will determine the balance of power in the OT's parliament. At the time of writing this correspondence, the Turks and Caicos government has not issued a written notice of the returns of such election,” Williams said in his letter
However, Williams appears to have overlooked or been unaware of an email sent from TCIGPressRelease@gov.tc at 10:01 on Friday, March 22, 2013, to the press office’s local media distribution list captioned “Misick Declared By-Election Winner” and reporting that the PNP’s Amanda Misick had been declared the winner of the Richmond Hill and Cheshire Hall by election and giving the respective vote counts.
“Supervisor of Elections Dudley Lewis has advised that the PNP’s Amanda Misick has been declared the winner of the Richmond Hill and Cheshire Hall by election. The seat was contested by Oral Isaac Selver, of the People’s Democratic Party (PDM) and Amanda A. Misick, of the Progressive National Party (PNP). Nomination was held on Friday March 1, 2013. Missick polled 455 votes to Selver’s 385 votes,” the email on Friday night said.
When contacted for comment, Philip Rushbrook of the Governor’s Office said he had not yet seen the letter in question from Williams to the UK ministers.
