According to dictionary.com a patriot is a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion. He/she is a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, especially of individual rights, against presumed interference by the nation’s government. In a historical context, those colonists of the thirteen US colonies who violently rebelled against British control during the American Revolution and in July 1776 declared the United States of America an independent nation were regarded as patriots. Based on these definitions and several others, there are many ways to define the word ‘patriot’ or to describe who a patriot is.
However, I am convinced that only a few people truly understand what it means to grasp the essence of true patriotism. People can call themselves patriots because they love their country or they defend what their country stands for. But a true patriot also knows when to oppose what their country stands for and expose those truths to their fellow men. A true patriot knows that patriotism is not just about claiming the title and wearing symbols of national pride and patriotism. A true patriot appreciates his country’s history, and the sacrifices which have been made by others to establish what we have today and also are prepared to make such said sacrifices to maintain and preserve their way of life and defend it at all cost.
A true patriot need not explain his reasoning for his patriotism or offer discourses on why he believes his country needs defending. Instead, a true patriot is prepared to answer JFK’s challenge to his generation to ask not what their country can do for them but what can a patriot do for his country. The times and seasons which we find ourselves now experiencing in the TCI now calls for the mobilization of true patriots.
This movement is being fueled by Turks and Caicos Islanders who appreciate our history, celebrate our accomplishment, but also understand that there is much work to be done if we are to realize our full potential as a nation. We have committed ourselves to Help Our People Excel (HOPE) with the intention to position ours and the next generation to Possess Our Wealth Economy and Resources (POWER).
If you can identify with any of the passion, definition or characteristics described above, then you are a TCI Patriot. If you believe in our people and their ability to accomplish anything they set their minds to, then you are a patriot. If you believe that it is a collective responsibility that our nation succeeds and we must unite and develop a generation of effective leadership with Integrity then you are a patriot.
A little more than 40 years ago a few young patriots got together and changed the course of this country’s history by writing a new chapter in our story. We believe it’s time for us to write the next chapter.
